Anne Rice Calls 'Twilight Saga' A 'Failure Of The Imagination'
"['Twilight']’s based on a really silly premise: that immortals would go to high school. It's a failure of imagination, but at the same time, that silly premise has provided Stephenie Meyer with huge success," Anne said. "The idea that if you are immortal you would go to high school instead of Katmandu or Paris or Venice, it’s the vampire dumbed down for kids. But it's worked. It's successful. It makes kids really happy."
It's not too surprising that Anne had less-than-sweet nothings to whisper about the series that has made vampires the hottest supernatural property around and virtually diluted a genre that had been a sophisticated cultural metaphor. Still, wow, those are some pretty harsh words towards Stephenie! Anne did add that "it's almost like a stroke of genius to put vampires in high school," but that still sounds a bit derogatory to us.
When speaking about how she always viewed the vampire, Anne said, "I always thought of the vampire as being a metaphor for the outsider in each of us, the criminal, the predator. I was writing about a mythical being that represented our own dark sides." She added, "Part of the mystery of being a human being is that mixture of the spiritual and the animalian. We have the capacity to murder, but also the capacity to love and respond and be tender to those in need."
Anne was sure to emphasize that, despite the range of vampires presented in pop culture since she released "Interview With the Vampire" in 1976—from "The Twilight Saga" to "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries"—they are still fictional characters. "They’re fantasy characters, and we have to keep reminding ourselves of this. They don’t exist," she said. "I get e-mails from people who are outraged that I watch 'True Blood.' They say, 'How can you condone the evil of "True Blood."' I say, 'Are you kidding? Vampires aren’t real. Keep that in mind.'"
Are you surprised Anne Rice attacked Stephenie Meyer so harshly? Do you agree with what she said about the vampire genre?
Well...What do you think?

Lucy Hale Was Almost Cast as Alice Cullen!
Lucy Hale may be best known for playing Aria on the hit series Pretty Little Liars, but she almost got her big break in The Twilight Saga instead! "I auditioned for [the role of] Alice," Lucy says. "I read the books and I wanted to be part of the first movie so bad."
SEE IT: Lucy's J-14 video, "When I Was 14..."
The role ultimately went to Ashley Greene, but Lucy didn't give up on her vampire dreams. "I heard about this new role, Jane, who was going to be a part of the second one, and I went for that," she says. But, alas, Dakota Fanning was chosen to play Jane instead.
Still, Lucy has no hard feelings, and remains a total Twi-hard. "I love everyone they've cast," she says. "I'm such a believer in everything happens for a reason and it's all about timing. I like where I'm at right now!"
Do you think Lucy Hale would have made a good Alice or Jane? Or do you like her best in human roles?

Summit Entertainment has just announced another crucial date for Twi-hards to mark on their calendars! It's just been revealed that the second half of the final installment of the series, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, will unfold onscreen on November 16, 2012. C'mon, it's only 836 days away!
J-14 found out in July that production on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn will begin this fall and that Part 1 will hit theaters late next year on November 18, 2011. All of the main cast members from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be returning, but still no word on if Breaking Dawn will be shot and released in 3D.
Do you think you'll still be into The Twilight Saga by the time November 2012 rolls around?
Tell me in the comments!

Exactly Like Renesmee...
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Casts Irina and Renesmee
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn starts filming preparations next month and it looks like two new cast members are ready to join the crew. Lost's Maggie Grace has officially signed on to play Irina, a member of the Denali coven (a.k.a. the Cullen's cousin "vegetarian" clan) who causes serious trouble for Bella and Edward.
Meanwhile, newcomer 9-year-old Mackenzie Foy is reportedly very close to finalizing the deal to play Renesmee Cullen, Bella and Edward's daughter. Mackenzie has only appeared in a few TV episodes and commercials before, but she's a trained dancer -- and has a purple belt in Taekwondo! Since Renesmee ages 17 years in only seven, there's talk that director Bill Condon will use digital effects to superimpose Mackenzie's face on the body of a younger child or use a younger child actress for some scenes.
Get a first look at Mackenzie Foy in this YouTube video:

A Special Note from Bill Condon (Breaking Dawn Director)
Hello fans!
Has it really been five months (and a day) since my last dispatch? In my defense, they've been five months spent immersed in the world of TWILIGHT - something I'm sure you can all appreciate. We're in the thick of pre-production now, juggling everything from casting to storyboarding to location scouting, getting it all ready to go, but I do want to take a moment to announce to you exclusively a few of the amazing production team members who are hard at work alongside me, bringing these movies to life. I hope you'll be as excited about them as I am:
Guillermo Navarro, who won an Academy Award for the beautiful PAN'S LABYRINTH, is our cinematographer. Guillermo and I have been painstakingly planning each shot, with a team of very talented storyboard artists.
Michael Wilkinson, our costume designer, is bringing his brilliant vision to the styles of all your favorite characters. Michael's created fantastic looks for 300, WATCHMEN, and the upcoming TRON: LEGACY - just wait 'til you see his take on the vampire witnesses who come to Forks from around the globe.
Jean Black, our makeup designer, has worked extensively with the Coen Brothers and David Fincher, most recently making exquisite, award-winning contributions to THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON. I'm honored to be working with her.
Richard Sherman, with whom I made GODS AND MONSTERS and KINSEY, is on-board as our production designer. Richard's one of my oldest collaborators and a terrific designer, and you may be interested to know that he also happens to be a lifelong vampire aficionado.
Our Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor John Bruno has been responsible for some of the most memorable special effects ever, with his groundbreaking work on display in everything from POLTERGEIST to AVATAR. He and his team are working intensely to develop solutions to the host of special effects challenges that Stephenie created for us in BREAKING DAWN, including that remarkable kid...
Wonderful, imaginative people all and very exciting, intense times for us. Even with the months of work we've already put in, we're barely underway on the journey, and I do hope to get back to you much sooner next time with more news. Until then, thanks for your warm reception and continued support!
Very best regards,
Bill

Summit Addresses The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Rumors Read more about Summit Addresses The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Rumors
1. Bella and Edward's miracle child, Renesmee, will not have a change of name for the movie — good or bad news, depending on your opinion.
2. Newborn vampire Riley (Xavier Samuel), first seen in Eclipse, will not be rising from the ashes to make an appearance in Breaking Dawn. His IMDb page is wrong — don't believe everything you read there, Twilighters.
3. Deborah Zane is the only casting director working on Breaking Dawn. No local auditions are being held, and there are no nationwide casting notices.
We're sure it won't be long before Summit is back with another edition of "Breaking Dawn: True or False?," so stay tuned."
OMG! So I guess you can't believe magazines! Because I read in a magazine that you can audition for a role in Breaking Dawn. But...they'll probably be taking auditions for some songs in the soundtrack! Which reminds me, did I tell you that I wrote a song for the soundtrack and I'm going to turn it in?! Well, the answer is TRUE!

Breaking Dawn Facebook Update from Melissa Rosenberg
As fans of The Twilight Saga wait for the two-part Breaking Dawn, Twilight Saga screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg revealed that things were still shaping up with director Bill Condon and that fans can expect to see sex, birth, blood, and more.
Melissa Rosenberg posted the following Breaking Dawn update on her Facebook page:
"Hi Y'all! Sorry I haven't checked in for a while. Been immersed in the world of Breaking Dawn. I've been working very closely with our director Bill Condon, whose input has been SO great. He understands story, structure and character as only a fellow writer can, but he also has fantastic visual ideas. And he's not... shying away from anything! Sex, birth, feathers, blood... it's all in there. More later! xoxo Mel"
All of the young Twi-Hards will be disappointed if they had to be carried out of the movie theater. Including me, because I'm only 11...But let's just hope it won't go into detail!

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Blu-Ray DVD!
Amazon.com has opened up their Eclipse pre-orders, selling the Blu-ray and DVD combo pack for $28.49 or 30% off the $40.99 list price. That's fairly typical pricing and will likely hold under the title's release.
The pre-orders just began so no sign of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on Amazon's hourly Blu-ray bestsellers list yet. That will likely change by this time tomorrow.
